NSW: Shortage of vets harming rural NSW
The Rural Lands Protection Boards has warned country New South Wales is experiencing
a severe vet shortage.
Nyngan chairman DAVID LISTER says several rural areas are struggling to find district
vets with some positions taking two years to fill.
He says he's tried advertising and has now turned to a Perth-based recruitment firm
who'll post an ad on the Internet.
Mr LISTER says he hopes the ad will attract overseas candidates for the job that's
been vacant since January.
Braidwood recently appointed a vet after a two-year search while Coonamble and the
South Coast are still without vets.
The rural boards are now approaching universities urging them to encourage students
to seek work in rural areas.
Mr LISTER says vets play a key role in rural communities where work on reproduction
problems in sheep and cattle can have a direct financial benefit for producers.
